Summary: ULB seminar: Juri Smirnov - "Dark Matter Bound States"
Description:
Abstract:I will discuss the implications of unstable bound-state formation on the computations of dark matter relic abundance and point out that it many models it can be a crucial non-perturbative effect, which must not be ignored.I will then discuss the possibility that dark matter itself might be a composite state. This scenario is aesthetically pleasing, as dark matter stability is guaranteed by a new baryon number. Also interesting observational signatures arise in this framework, in particular with respect to indirect detection. At the end I will address the question, whether the gluon is a possible mediator to the dark sector and discuss implication of such a scenario in a concrete model.

Friday, March 23
Time: 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Summary: ULB seminar: Jonathan Davis - "Strongly-interacting dark matter: constraints, signals and models"
Description: I will discuss the concept of dark matter particles which interact with nuclear matter via strong interactions (but not necessarily QCD), rather than the traditional weakly-interacting massive particle. I show that these particles are difficult to constrain with standard underground direct detection experiments, and that a recent surface run of the CRESST experiment can place new constraints on the properties of this SIMP dark matter. I then discuss other constraints on such SIMP dark matter from astrophysics, cosmology and colliders and finish with a summary of models which can give such large interaction cross sections.
