PhD scholarship on the imaging of large structures with cosmic-ray muons

Ref.: CP3-PhD-muography-Dec2018

On-line application form
Announced: 17th December 2018
Open until filled.

The center for Cosmology, Particle Physics and Phenomenology (CP3) of the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) invites applications for one position aimed to obtain a Ph.D. in experimental particle physics, funded for four years.

The research project, under the primary supervision of Andrea Giammanco and co-supervision by Eduardo Cortina Gil, will be in the area of imaging of large structures exploiting the large natural flux of muons from cosmic-ray interactions in the atmosphere (see a recent review here). Our planned activities include instrumental aspects (development of a high-resolution and portable muon telescope, improving upon our first prototype - see, data analysis (as part of the MURAVES collaboration, aiming at the imaging of targets of volcanological and archaeological interest in Italy), and simulations. Depending on the skills and preferences of the selected candidate, the PhD thesis may primarily focus on one or two of those sub-topics. There are no teaching duties in this position.

The position is open to candidates of any nationality. This position will remain open until suitable candidates are found, but the first screening of applicants will start on the 16th of January, therefore we advice to complete your application by then. Although the current funding only allows us to cover a single PhD scholarship, short-listed candidates may be considered for other positions in case other budgets become available in the near future.

Applications, including curriculum vitae and a list of publications, should be submitted online at this web page. Please indicate at least two reference persons who agree to be contacted by us. (Optionally, you can also ask your reference persons to send their letters directly to the address below.)
